A Monument to the Blueness of the Sky

The Cyanometer by Martin Bricelj Baraga is a monolith that measures the blueness of the sky and visualises the quality of air in Ljubljana, and simultaneously sends data to an online archive.

The cyanometer was invented by Geneva-based scientist Horace Benedict de Saussure in 1789. He systematically documented the blueness of the sky with his cyanometer, which was a simple circular tool with 53 shades of blue. He concluded that blueness is influenced by both moisture and the amount of suspended particles in the air.

The art installation Cyanometer by Martin Bricelj Baraga is inspired by the original cyanometer. De Saussure’s cyanometer – a blue color wheel, forms the core of the monument, gently directing our gaze back to the sky. The monolith gatheres data of the blueness of the sky and the quality of air and visualises them, thus becoming an instrument which raises awareness on the quality of a crucial element of life.

In a cloud based world, the only clouds that really matter are the ones we see in the sky.

The Cyanometer is a new nonument from the Nonument series. Nonuments are a series of Martin Bricelj Baraga’s futuristic, sci-fi and utopian installations and objects in public spaces.

Museum of Transitory Art

MoTA is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to advancing the research, production and presentation of transitory, experimental, and live art forms.

MoTA is a museum without a permanent collection or a fixed space. Instead, its programs are realised in different locations and contexts in temporary physical and virtual spaces.

MoTA organizes and supports transitory art in the form of continuous events, exhibitions and educational programs both locally and internationally. As its name indicates, MoTA examines what a museum can be today and in the future.

MoTA is in constant search for the new, the uncertain, and the undefined.

MoTA works on several continuous programmes & projects. We run MoTA Point – a Space for Art & Ideas, we curate and produce the annual SONICA Festival, in addition to regular music programmes such as SONICA Series and SONICA Classics.

Within the years of running our residency programme, we’ve established T.R.I.B.E. – a network of residency spaces in the Balkans & Eastern Europe.

We’ve also initiated the research and archive platforms ArtistTalk.eu and Mediateque MoTA & Tomaž Brate. Our educational programmes serve a broader audience with ongoing workshops, talks, symposia, and internships.
