Martin Bricelj Baraga’s Cyanometer is a monument to the blue of the sky. It is inspired by the cyanometer invented in 1789 by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, who used it to measure the blue of the Geneva sky every day. The cyanometer is both a monument and a piece of software that regularly collects images of the sky and translates them into the corresponding shade of blue on de Saussure’s scale. The Cyanometer is a retrospective calendar of changes in our environment, collecting data on the blueness of the sky and the quality of the air, thus becoming an instrument that raises awareness about the quality of one of the key elements of life.
The new installation for the U3 – Triennial of Contemporary Art shows a video of a day in the sky from four different cities, taken by the cyanometer in which it is installed: Ljubljana, Geneva, Wroclaw, Millstatt. Throughout the Biennale, the average blue of the day is calculated and added to the table.
The Cyanometer public sculpture can be seen in Ljubljana in the city centre on the Ajdovščina platform and on the cyanometer.net website, where you can see real-time comparisons of the different skies where the Cyanometer is installed.
