SONICA Festival of Transtitory Art

15–30 November 2013;
Various venues, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The fifth edition of SONICA FESTIVAL brings a bunch of fresh urban interventions, sound and intermedia installations, performances, workshops, audiovisual concerts and club events. The main event will take place in CUK Kino Šiška with a with an exclusive AV performance by the legendary Slovene electronic duo Random Logic and the cult British electronic minimalists SND.

Sonica 2013 Festival program is a continuation of the ongoing explorations of MoTA – Museum of Transitory Art in search of transitional, transitory ‘ lines of flight ‘ in the transitional field between music and contemporary art, a highly heterogeneous field of creative forces. Sonica perceives sound as a transitory medium that crosses the walls, bodies and spaces, sound that is present everywhere in the urban milieu, sound that is embodied in objects, concepts, thoughts, in art forms such as music, speech and in images, but at the same time transcends them with its elusive and fleeting, constantly changing nature. Sound is impossible to frame, or contain. This is precisely the challenge of this year’s Sonica Festival, which again crosses varied artistic principles and approaches. This challenge is embodied in the sound installations and objects; in sound sculptures of Yuri Suzuki and processed through the rhythmic mechanics of portable cd players listening to themselves by Stephen Cornford, pulsating through the experience of minimalist electronic music duo SND, is inhabited in in-between field of visual and auditory concert by new project of Random Logic, as well as in the field of bass frequencies and militant techno rhythm from Anstam. Sonica has teamed up with a cult RadioStudent in the occupation of Metelkova City with Nik Nowak’s brutal Panzer. It also transforms the space in installations by Karina Smigla-Bobinski and Jan Vormann.

Sonica again follows its basic mission: to locate transitions between different shapes of expression between art and popular culture which art cannot escape.

MoTA –

Museum of Transitory Art

MoTA is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to advancing the research, production and presentation of transitory, experimental, and live art forms.

MoTA is a museum without a permanent collection or a fixed space. Instead, its programs are realised in different locations and contexts in temporary physical and virtual spaces.

MoTA organizes and supports transitory art in the form of continuous events, exhibitions and educational programs both locally and internationally. As its name indicates, MoTA examines what a museum can be today and in the future.

MoTA is in constant search for the new, the uncertain, and the undefined.

MoTA works on several continuous programmes & projects. We run MoTA Point – a Space for Art & Ideas, we curate and produce the annual SONICA Festival, in addition to regular music programmes such as SONICA Series and SONICA Classics.

Within the years of running our residency programme, we’ve established T.R.I.B.E. – a network of residency spaces in the Balkans & Eastern Europe.

We’ve also initiated the research and archive platforms ArtistTalk.eu and Mediateque MoTA & Tomaž Brate. Our educational programmes serve a broader audience with ongoing workshops, talks, symposia, and internships.
