Moonolith at the Ljubljana Castle

On the first day of spring, MOONOLITH will land at Ljubljana Castle!
MOONOLITH is an interactive monument for public spaces. It reflects the moon and the constellations of stars on its surface. Dedicated to urban strollers, it is a tribute to dark matter, emptiness, void, in-between space, speed, and time and its passage. The installation is site-specific – with every placement, it develops new relationships with the guest space and the visitors.
MOONOLITH is a large round celestial sphere that operates on two levels. Through interaction, its surface becomes a responsive light and sound instrument which opens up the field of play. In its rest phase, MOONOLITH functions as a sculpture with subtle movements of light and sound, and represents a space of calmness and reflection for the visitor. The basic model of MOONOLITH is a sphere which connects both with the night sky (the celestial sphere) and with the residents and visitors of the city through its modular design and audio-visual dynamics on the surface, and its placement in the public areas of the city.. The visual (shape, colour surface) and lighting characteristics of the MOONOLITH object reflect the starry night sky, the moon and the stars. Different versions of an interactive layer are then spread through these primary layers, responding in various ways to the auditory and visual stimuli of the visitors.

Martin Bricelj Baraga is a media artist and independent curator. His interactive works, audio-visual performances and collaborative work explore the relationship between man and machine, the social aspects of popular culture, contemporary monumentalism and the political dimensions of media reality. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and art spaces around the world. Last year, the installation DarkStar was the winning installation of an open call issued by the festival Glow Next, which was visited by 400,000 people.

MoTA is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to advancing the research, production and presentation of transitory, experimental, and live art forms.

MoTA is a museum without a permanent collection or a fixed space. Instead, its programs are realised in different locations and contexts in temporary physical and virtual spaces.

MoTA organizes and supports transitory art in the form of continuous events, exhibitions and educational programs both locally and internationally. As its name indicates, MoTA examines what a museum can be today and in the future.

MoTA is in constant search for the new, the uncertain, and the undefined.

MoTA works on several continuous programmes & projects. We run MoTA Point – a Space for Art & Ideas, we curate and produce the annual SONICA Festival, in addition to regular music programmes such as SONICA Series and SONICA Classics.

Within the years of running our residency programme, we’ve established T.R.I.B.E. – a network of residency spaces in the Balkans & Eastern Europe.

We’ve also initiated the research and archive platforms ArtistTalk.eu and Mediateque MoTA & Tomaž Brate. Our educational programmes serve a broader audience with ongoing workshops, talks, symposia, and internships.
