Over the past ten years, Australian Lawrence English, musician, writer, publisher and curator, has become one of the leading international names in field recordings and electroacoustic and ambient music. He’s distinguished by an exceptional sensibility for creating expressive soundscapes that break down our perception of sound and space, taking us to the very heart of the sound he conceives through his listening policy. He has worked and performed all over the world, from Antarctica to Japan. His recordings reflect his personal approach, characterised by a sophisticated technique and the subtle monitoring of the transformations of sound.
He owns the Room40 label, which has released some of the best ambient albums of all time, for example Keith Fullerton Whitman and Tim Hecker. He has collaborated with leading names in the field of electroacoustic music and sonic art, artists such as DJ Olive, David Toop, Stephan Vitiello, Akio Suzuki, Liz Harris (Grouper) and Francisco Lopez.
He describes his 2017 album Cruel Optimism as a protest against the refugee crisis, Donald Trump, the use of sonic weapons and everything that the future holds in store for us. The album features important contributions from Thor Harris (ex-Swans) and two thirds of The Necks, among others.
