A new cycle of exhibitions and events at MoTA LAB!
MoTA Lab’s Sonic Pavilion is a new gallery facing Tivoli Park. Its transparent structure and distinctive architecture allow for varied spatial setups and experiments with intermedia, sound, and research-based artworks. From September to December, MoTA Lab will host four exhibitions, an immersive artist talk, the premiere of the SONICA 2026 festival residency and an accompanying discursive programme.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the acclaimed light installation Lighthouse by internationally renowned artist Vadim Fishkin (1965), who has been living and working in Ljubljana since 1992, we announce his exhibition at MoTA LAB. Lighthouse, which has so far been presented in Rotterdam, Vienna, Moscow, Merano, Plovdiv and Prizren, is based on a light signal that flashes in the rhythm of Fishkin’s heartbeat, wherever in the world the artist may be. His heartbeat is transmitted via mobile technology to the light installation, turning MoTA LAB into a lighthouse that sends signals out into the world.
We begin the series of events with the exhibition Goaders by visual artist Ema Maznik Antić (1998), an experiment “with nomadic site-specificity” that seeks to answer the question of what remains materially specific when a practice leaves a location, and whether material specificity might instead lie in the possibilities opened up by the state of things.
In September, MoTA Lab is hosting the immersive artist talk Transitory Fictions by researcher and artist Klara Debeljak (1995) and theatre director and writer Jan Krmelj (1995). Transitory Fictions is a speculative theory that describes the formation of temporary narratives embedded in the history and possible futures of selected architectures. The event will be both a conversation and an installation, addressing projects in progress, past projects and the directions of their research.
In November, the residency and residency premiere of the SONICA 2026 festival will take place, followed by an exhibition. This year’s resident artists are visual artist Matej Mihevc (1995), whose work explores in various ways the impact of new technologies on cultural production, and Polish drummer and composer Szymon Gąsiorek – Pimpon (1993), a member of numerous ensembles and projects whose genre-full sonic material ranges from heavy drum grooves and electronic sequences through noise, field recordings and static textures to modern pop sound produced by synthesizers and autotuned vocal. Commissioned by SONICA, the two artists will create a new original work.
This year’s Sonic Pavilion will conclude with the exhibition GC-RAMA by visual artist Maks Bricelj (1991), who explores liminal spaces and less visible infrastructural architecture, with a particular focus on the exteriors and interiors of water reservoirs.
