Yuri Landman (1973) is a musician and an inventor of musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. He has worked with experimental acts such as Sonic Youth, dEUS, Melt-Banana, Rhys Chatham, Ex-Easter Island Head, Half Japanese, Kaki King.

In the past six years he has given over 100 DIY-instrument building workshops in Europe and the US at music festivals, music academies, art academies, concert venues and art spaces. In 2012 Yuri Landman and Bart Hopkin published Nice Noise, a book about string preparations and extended techniques for guitar. In the same year he started his band Bismuth with Arnold van de Velde followed by an album in 2014 Bismuth.

Institutes such as MIM (Phoenix), Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, WORM, Sonoscopia own collections of his instruments. Articles about his work have appeared in Pitchfork, The Guardian, CNN, Libération, El País, Frankfurter Algemeine, and many others.

Sonica festival, Ljudmila and Projekt Atol are presenting a 4-day workshop residency with DIY custum built instruments master Yuri Landman. Hack your hard drive into a lo-fi instrument, build your own electronic Kalimba or create your own string instrument based on Kazimir Malevich paintings. Or do all three under the mentorship of world renowned creator, who designed instruments for Sonic Youth, Liars, HEALTH and Dinosaur Jr.!

HACKED HARD DISK DRIVE

Nov 11 @ 7 pm

Ljudmila

HDD schuin

With a simple deconstructive hack you can turn your old Hard Disc Drive into a wild sounding low frequency dub step “BWWFFOOOOHHH“. For this workshop you have to bring your own HDD and IMPORTANT: check the type of screws used on your harddrive and buy a screwdriver that matches with these screws. Most HDD have small torque screws. Any decent DIY shop has screwdrivers for these uncommon screwheads.

MALEVICH STRING PLATE
Nov 12 and 13
5 – 9 pm

Ljudmila

malevich

In this workshop Landman guides a group of participants in their process to create a unique instrument of their own design. Based on the famous geometric abstract paintings by Malevich Landman found a way to enhance the sounds of strings by crossing them. The sounds of these clustered strings can be compared to Chinese gongs, Gamelan bells and spooky metallic sounds often occuring in scary movies. Each participant makes his own sets of crossed strings, resulting in an abstract sound plate sculpture. The instrument is electric, so can be plugged into a guitar amp for maximum sound pressure!

Cost: 35€

Museum of Transitory Art

MoTA –

Museum of Transitory Art

MoTA is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to advancing the research, production and presentation of transitory, experimental, and live art forms.

MoTA is a museum without a permanent collection or a fixed space. Instead, its programs are realised in different locations and contexts in temporary physical and virtual spaces.

MoTA organizes and supports transitory art in the form of continuous events, exhibitions and educational programs both locally and internationally. As its name indicates, MoTA examines what a museum can be today and in the future.

MoTA is in constant search for the new, the uncertain, and the undefined.

MoTA works on several continuous programmes & projects. We run MoTA Point – a Space for Art & Ideas, we curate and produce the annual SONICA Festival, in addition to regular music programmes such as SONICA Series and SONICA Classics.

Within the years of running our residency programme, we’ve established T.R.I.B.E. – a network of residency spaces in the Balkans & Eastern Europe.

We’ve also initiated the research and archive platforms ArtistTalk.eu and Mediateque MoTA & Tomaž Brate. Our educational programmes serve a broader audience with ongoing workshops, talks, symposia, and internships.
